When referencing different number of authors use the same format in the author field as shown in the Books and eBooks sections of this guide. For example:

  • Spell out all authors’ names in the reference list when your reference has up to and including seven authors.
  • When a reference list entry has eight or more authors, list the first six authors, insert an ellipse (…) and then provide the name of the final author.
  • For in-text citations with one or two authors, use all authors’ names every time you cite them.
  • For in-text citations with three to five authors, list all authors’ names the first time you cite them; then in further citations, include only the first author’s name plus ‘et al.’
  • For in-text citations with six or more authors, only include the first author’s name, plus ‘et al.’, in all citations.

Paraphrasing

Surname and Surname (YEAR) indicate that .....

..... (Surname & Surname, YEAR).

Herbst (2014) assessed cowboys' conformity to paradigms of masculinity and their degree of participation in treatment for depression.

Quoting

Webster (2008) identifies that “recently, self-compassion has been identified as an important  psychological construct distinguishable from  self-esteem” (p. 17).
