Improve your technology skills

Below you will find tutorials and resources to help you improve your technology skills, such as using a computer keyboard, creating documents, protecting your computer from viruses, or avoiding online scams. For assistance with ACAP-provided technology such as the Student Portal, contact IT @ Student Helpdesk.

Many public libraries offer basic technology help. A list of resources to find your local public library can be found near the bottom of this page.

Your Academic Skills advisors have created resources to help you improve your technology skills. Log in with your student portal details (student number and password).

Essential Technology Skills

Here some extra resources to improve your computer skills. Some of these resources will cover both basic computer use and how to use the internet.

GCF Global: Basic Computer Skills
These self-paced tutorials will help you learn how to use a computer. Topics include: getting started, undoing mistakes, file extensions, downloading and uploading, free software, set up personal systems such as wi-fi and printers at home, and more.
Be Connected: Computer basics for beginners
Learn the essentials of using a computer, laptop, tablet and smartphone, and find out about the internet, web browsers, web addresses and search engines. Managed by the Australian Government.
TypingClub
Learn touch typing for free.
Alison
Alison provides over 5500 free online courses. This page lets you search for different topics. Apps are also available in the Apple App Store and Google Play. You may need to create an account.
Microsoft Digital Literacy courses
Learn how to gain digital literacy to use devices, software, and the Internet to collaborate with others and discover, use, and create information. You can download videos in multiple languages (bottom of the page) or access LinkedIn Learning courses.
Digital Learn
If you are new to computers, haven't used them for a while, are a little unsure and uncomfortable, or just need a bit of a refresher, we have the tools to help you tackle technology at your own pace and gain the confidence you need to succeed. Some resources are America-specific, but most are helpful globally. Managed by the Public Library Association in the United States.

Antivirus software provides protection against malicious software (or malware). It helps to keep your devices secure and protect your personal information. This website is managed by the Australian Government.
Personal cyber security guides
How to protect your devices when using the internet. Managed by the Australian government.
Scamwatch
Scamwatch is run by the National Anti-Scam Centre to collect reports about scams to help us warn others and to take action to stop scams. They also provide up-to-date information to help you spot and avoid scams.

To find your local public library in Australia, you may use the following resources:

South Australia: Locate a Library (Libraries SA)
Western Australia: Find a public library (State Library WA)
Tasmania: Libraries Tasmania map
Northern Territory: Find a library in the NT
Australian Capital Territory: Libraries ACT

In larger states, public libraries are run by your local council. In smaller states and territories, they may be run by the local State Library or by the state or territory government. You can also try Google searching for public libraries in your local area.

Your local public library provides many free resources to further your learning.
